Auckland markets

The Aotea Square Market is an open-air market with a buzzing atmosphere. It is open on Friday and Saturdays from 10am until 6pm. The market is situated in Aotea Square on Queen Street and is a central spot for friends to meet up and hang out. Indeed, the square is taken to be the very centre of Auckland city. The city’s Visitor’s Centre is also located on Queen Street and is definitely the place to go if you want help to plan your time here.

I went to the market on a Saturday shopping for souvenirs but grew increasingly distracted by the stalls selling pretty much anything and everything from Pacific arts and crafts to modern fashions; you can also find beautiful jewellery pieces and clothes alongside ethnic culinary delights. I went away with a stunning, hand-stitched shawl and an amber bracelet not to mention an interesting nutty cake. However, my favourite purchase by a long way was an Australian didgeridoo! It has beautiful red paintwork and it now rests in pride of place under my mantle piece - just don’t ask me to try playing it!

The Auckland Town Hall is situated at the Queen Street entrance to the square where there is also an imposing ‘Maori Gate’ made from wood and copper. Near the Town Hall there is also a statue of a Maori warrior and so there is a great cultural feeling to the Square itself. The market is a treat for all the senses with music in the air, wafts of delicious foods and the visually striking blue and white tents. There is also ‘Stark’s Café’ in the Square that sells drinks and snacks.
